ASID NY METRO Chapter Strategic Plan 2012-2013

Chapter Mission Statement:

We are the premiere professional association of interior designers in the NY Metropolitan area.  Our abiding mission is to elevate and strengthen the professional practice of Interior Design in the NY Metropolitan region.  Through educational outreach, support of vital legislation, and programming for the public and our membership, we enhance the visibility and credibility of the ASID brand, help our members grow and strengthen their businesses, and serve our communities.

 

Chapter Vision Statement:

As the NY Metro chapter of ASID, we believe that the practice of Interior Design has an ever-increasing impact on the psychological, physical and economic quality of our lives.  In a world of diminishing resources and mounting challenges, we are committed to ASID’s guiding principles of excellence in education and professional practice, and are uniquely prepared to play a vital role in our communities.  Through our efforts, we will promote the value of interior design, contribute to the welfare of our communities, and generate new areas of opportunity for our profession.

 Goal Summary:

GOAL 1 -   BE THE CORE OF THE NY DESIGN NETWORK

Demonstrate the value of the ASID network to all stakeholders that results in recognition as the industry leader.

 

Objective 1. Based on market and global trends, identify the key stakeholders (new and existing) across multiple professions, demographics, organizations and institutions that are shaping the profession.

 

Strategy 1.  Analyze all chapter events for opportunities to partner with and provide added value to members  and stakeholders. Revise program schedule, locations and content accordingly.

 

Tactic 1.    Analyze and edit events calendar to reflect  added value strategy.

Tactic 2. Create two panel programs with (ex:)  designer, architect, design press, IDLNY, educator, legislator re: state of design profession. Target students, (free) emerging practioners,providing critical content for practitioners, IPs and outside stakeholder.   Cultivate recources with IIDA and AIA.

Tactic 3.    CEUs Produce two high quality content CEU’s (HSW credits approved by IDCEC and AIA  regarding sustainability, business practices,evidence based design, technology tools, etc. Invite IIDA, AIA, etc NOTE:  incorporate CEUs into Design Walk and/or RWDW if feasible.

Tactic 4.    Design Walk – Can combine with CEUs (Tactic 3 above)  Develop/ promote as annual event.  Maximize opportunities to partner. Create value to members, non-members. Investigate  opportunities for strategic growth as SP vehicle.  Maximize media,PR, fundraising, while disseminating value-added insightful content . Invite IIDA, AIA, etc.

Tactic 5.  Chapter events include well-considered networking to assist membership with internships, jobs and mentoring

Objective 2.    Develop physical & virtual venues that cultivate insights from multiple stakeholders regarding the future of the profession. Strategy 1.   Create policy of capturing all informational content to post on website and social media to serve ASID members and stakeholders/clients  unable to attend events.

 

Tactic 1.   Create videos of two panel discussions and excerpts of CEU’s .

Tactic 2.   Post to social media and chapter website.  Push link to members

 

Objective 3.    Synthesize future insights that establish the research agenda and drive an expanded knowledge platform to develop the practice.     Strategy 1.  Create opportunity to gather member and stakeholder input 24/7.  Tactic 1.    Investigate ability to start on-line discussions of chapter programs, services.

GOAL 2 – EXPAND KNOWLEDGE                                                                                               

Demonstrate and communicate the value of interior design that results in ASID’s recognition as an information and knowledge resource.

 

Objective 1.    Broaden the technological base and expertise of the organization and its members.

 

Strategy 1.   Use technology to push information to members and beyond

 

Tactic 1.   Identify chapter shortfalls in technology expertise and hardware

Tactic 2.    Identify resources needed to improve chapter tech. expertise & hardware

Tactic 3.  Apply resources and resolve technology shortfalls.

Objective 2.   Establish and commit to a long-term research agenda.

 

Strategy 1.  Survey members annually to determine needs.  Combine needs with  research to develop program agenda.

 

Tactic 1.   Conduct focus groups with educators (program chairs, advisors, student affairs admin) and EP’s to determine what is valuable to them.

Tactic 2.   Conduct focus groups with membership to determine what is valuable to them. This can replace membership survey.

Tactic 3.    Investigate presentations of valuable content to alumni through ID schools.

Objective 3.    Disseminate and share applied research and design solutions through a comprehensive educational platform.

 

Strategy 1.   Develop and provide  relevant program content including case studies, tours and experiences.

 

Tactic 1.   Use feedback from Objective 2 (focus group data) above to provide relevant programs

Tactic 2.  Communicate focus group feedback and resulting educational programing to all members

GOAL 3 – DEVELOP THE PRACTICE 

Define and Deliver resources that help members expand their practice creating value that results in membership growth and retention.

 

Objective 1.    Recognize that the value of the ASID experience is delivered by members on an individual as well as collective basis.

 

Strategy 1.   Support and partner with like organizations to expand value of ASID membership

 

Tactic 1.    Invite leaders of IDLNY, NY-11, ELF IIDA and other stakeholders to explore how to create most value for members.

Tactic 2.   Develop plan for best mutually beneficial relationships. Coordinate with IIDA, IDLNY, NY-11 Plus, ELF, Upstate Chapter and others with Town Hall Meeting re: member benefits, professional path, legislation.

Tactic 3.  Deliver two collaborative programs (see Goal 1, Tactic 2)

Objective 2.    Execute a communications plan that promotes the value of interior design.

 

Strategy 1.   Develop, refine & implement communications plan and procedures that promote the value of interior design to internal and external audiences.  Incorporate into leadership training

 

INTERNAL-Tactic 1. Establish internal communications policy for all volunteers vis-à-vis chapter administrator.

INTERNAL-Tactic 2.  Implement communications policy and train volunteers as to proper procedures.

INTERNAL -Tactic 3. Continue creating and distributing membership testimonials for all categories

EXTERNAL-Tactic 4.    Develop chapter communcations plan incorporating results of technology plan

EXTERNAL-Tactic 5.  Identify resources needed to execute external communications plan.

EXTERNAL-Tactic 6. Inform members of external communications plan and timeline.

EXTERNAL-Tactic 7. Broadcast Student member accomplishments – to encourage students to engage in ASID as E.P.s and take up professional career path.

EXTERNAL-Tactic 8.    Further develop Speaker’s Bureau with focus on communicating value of ID professionalism & excellence. Prepare guidelines for speaker invovlement

EXTERNAL -Tactic 9.   Complete Su Casa Pro Bono project and maximize all opportunities to communicate value of interior design, HSW and ASIDas a source for high-quality commercial practitioners.

Objective 3.    Deliver a business development curriculum that creates member and brand value.

 

Strategy 1.   Provide business development and professional path support to members.

 

Tactic 1.   Assess business development needs for all membership categories. Refer to focus group findings from G2-O2-S1-T3

Tactic 2.   Prioritze and deliver: a.  emerging professionals event;  b. NCIDQ prep course;  c. Real World Design Week (See also G1- T6)

GOAL 4 -  CREATE A PERFORMANCE-ORIENTED ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE                                       

Design and implement a leadership culture that increases organizational performance and results in the optimization of human resources and I able to be carried from year to year.

 

Objective 1.    Develop and assess the effectiveness of the organization and individuals.

 

Strategy 1.   Recruit and train board and volunteers to ensure continuity, collegiality and effectiveness. (ongoing)

 

Tactic 1.    Provide leadership retreat experience.

Tactic 2.   Revise committee chair job descriptions as required. (ongoing) and Train Committee chairs to function effectively in collaboration with other committees and board members.

Tactic 3.   re-align and/or develop committee structure to address new chapter needs.  Ie. Marketing, PR, Awards, etc.

Objective 2.    Create a transparent management and  leadership communication system.

 

Strategy 1.   Advise all members of chapter management overview and provide appropriate access to communications channels.

 

Tactic 1.   Appoint a task force to develop chapter policies.

Tactic 2.    Educate volunteers about policies and procedures.

Tactic 3.    Acknowledge all volunteers to members virtually and at meetings. (ongoing)

Tactic 4.    Report to membership on chapter initiatives virtually and at meetings.

Objective 3.    Secure long-term organizational viability that includes a future view.

 

Strategy 1.   Manage chapter with fiduciary responsibility

 

Tactic 1.   Develop and implement scope of services contractors for all chapter contractors.

Tactic 2.  Annually and/or semi-annually formally review and assess performance,  compensation and contracts of all chapter

Tactic 3.    Re-align, consolidate and/or increase service providers as needed and resources allow.

Tactic 4.   Develop a budget to support the strategic plan.

Tactic 5.   Appoint a task force to develop chapter Bi-Laws based on the Society’s Bi-Laws.
