Designer Profile

Esther Sadowsky, allied member ASID, is the owner and designer at Charm & Whimsy. Located in midtown Manhattan, Esther has been designing children's rooms and adult spaces since 1983.Client, Rosemary Eden, said of Esther' design skills,"she turned my white box apartment into a HOME". As an award winning 1972 graduate of The Fashion Institute of Technology, with a degree in Textile Design, she embarked on a career designing textile patterns for menswear and home furnishings. Her sense of color and pattern enabled her to merge with Interior Design as she painted children's furniture, murals and accessories. "It seemed like a natural next step to combine my talent for matching colors in paint to matching colors in fabrics, flooring & accessories for the home". After the exposure of a Designer Show House, Esther created Charm&Whimsy when no one else was specializing in children's room design. Ms. Sadowsky has been featured on television with HGTV, LXTV OPENHOUSE NY, cable design programs and special home features. Books, magazines and newspapers have written about Charm&Whimsy from the very start. This exposure has given Esther a unique handle on designing special spaces for children... and adults too!

COLOR and more color is the theme for this young girls room. A custom designed rug pulled all the paint colors and fabrics together. There is plenty of room to grow with the wall units that surround the bed and where the play table is now, will eventually become a desk. Bright and sunny, this room is fun, playful and perfect.
A young girls' garden of delight, this room features a custom designed rug and hand painted furniture in a floral design. Even the picket fence is a practical disguise for the radiator. The eye travels well from border to floor and the child can grow into teen without changing much.
This gazebo is tucked into the woods connected to the main house by a bridge. Wood walls and ceiling, screened in on all sides and a wood burning stove create an unusual, easy place to spend time. Woodland furnishings and wicker compliment the outdoors.
Bold and bright, this nursery is under the big top. With 16' a ceiling, paint divides the height which creates a gallery above. Fun circus clowns, vintage posters and collectibles add fun to this babies room.
A family room for all to enjoy. Zoned for playing pool, watching TV, or having a drink at the bar, this room features comfy seating, great daylight and furnishings in a theme. woodland theme
This large room accommodates both child and parent for multiple activities. Arts & crafts, reading, playing and idol time can be enjoyed in this multicolor, fun space. The porch off this room continues the relaxing motif with fun seating. Custom designed shelving is flexible to suit many different needs over time.
This spa like bathroom is primarily used by a teenage girl, but also serves as a guest bathroom. Glass tiles, mosaics, and marbel are the main components in this space. Well appointed plumbing fixtures in nickel add the sparkle to an otherwise soothing respite. The shower seat and niche are the little extras that make it special.
A custom, curvaceous vanity sports a marble top and silver infused knobs. The large mirror above adds the sense of space to an otherwise small bathroom. Ceiling and wall mounted fixtures provide ample light sources.
Small, but packing a big punch, is this nursery in a city loft space. Colors, graphic images and crisp wood furniture make this gem of a room. The bold carpet set the tones of the fabrics, lighting, and rocking chair.
A fun spot to change the baby becomes a place for mom to check herself in the twin mirrors above. Bright and cheery accessories abound in this nursery.
A play room is also a family room when everyones' needs are addressed. A fun red metal shelving unit holds toys, the black rubber flooring helps to soften any falls and the comfy love seat is ready for reading the newspaper or nursery rhymes.
Another great family room that plays well with others. Zoned for playing games, art & crafts, music lessons and playing dress-up. While a crayon box of paint colors fills this room, it has clever features for storage, art display and provides hours of fun for parent and child.
A Plum Job is how I would describe this teenagers room. Shades of plum grays & black are the focus with stainless steel as an accent. Modern, clean and grown-up are how the young lady wanted it.
Black & White with raspberry accents are the theme & color palette of this teenagers room. Multiple patterns play with scale & fine vs. bold. The raspberry fabrics keep the from getting too hard edged.
