BACKGROUND

David Kaplan is an ASID Allied Member and graduated with a BFA degree from Parsons School of Design. Prior to establishing his own design firm in 1991, David worked with prominent designers in residential and contract interiors, as well as garden design. He taught interior design at Parsons and was also a participating designer in NYC’s Cancer Research Institute Designer Show House and the A.S.I.D. Scarsdale Designer Show House.

David’s projects include residences in New York City, Westchester, Connecticut, New Jersey and The Hamptons. They vary from decorating and space planning to those involving renovation and new construction to achieve the design objective. David’s work has been featured in various design publications and he has earned a regarded distinction for his creative kitchen and bathroom concepts. Other recent commissions include private residences in Atlanta, Pittsburgh, consulting for various offices in New York and Toronto, a restaurant in the Caribbean and condominium lobby designs.

Modern and antique furnishings compose a vibrant yet tranquil blend of charm and glamour in the Living Room
The 2-story Dining Room which leads to the main outside entertaining space was designed with a rusticated elegance in mind.
A redesign of the Kitchen/Gathering Room provides ample space for food prep, breakfast bar and casual lounging. Counters fabricated in iridescent flecked granite, backsplash in coordinating iridescent glass mosaic tile, floor in linoleum checkerboard pattern.

The Master Bathroom was redesigned as a luxurious home spa with double glass vessel sinks and wide countertop, oversized shower, and separate toilet room. Floors, walls and countertop in a combination of azul cielo marble and glass mosaic.
This spacious great room is divided into two separate seating arrangements - one for TV viewing and the other for relaxing or conversing while taking in the exceptional water view.
The master bedroom is accented by contrasts in color and texture - dark wood and ivory painted cabinets, deep blue and ivory textiles, matte finish surfaces and reflective mercury glass lamps and finials.  A full wall of doors opens onto a semi-private extension of the back deck.
This classically styled kitchen features backsplash tiles and countertops that reflect living by the sea.
Removal of a wall to create a peninsula counter area with double-sided glass upper cabinets aloong with a vaulted ceiling lend an air of expansiveness.
A gold leaf covered tray ceiling and malachite accents add a formal elegance to this dressing room/home office.  Neo-Classic, Asian, Biedermeier, and Art Deco elements yield a fusion style with a collective cultural spirit.
White trowelled concrete floors and a polished Venetian stucco wall treatment plus monorail track, wall sconces and cove lighting create a luminous backdrop for contemporary styled furnishings in this loft-like Living Room. Minimal window treatments allow unobstructed views out to the large setback terrace.

In the Master Bathroom a bold simplicity is achieved by a custom bamboo vanity cabinet and concrete countertop/integral sinks with the addition of a hatbox toilet. Wall and floor tiles are a combination of polished and frosted glass.
This Bohemian Urban Chic converted loft is decorated with hand crafted accessories and a bold purple, blue and gray color scheme throughout. An imaginative space/furniture plan maximizes use of limited square footage and conquers the challenge of odd angles.
A large antique theatre poster and other collectible theatre art notably set the stage upon entering this producer's NYC residence. An angled gallery and herringbone patterned Brazilian cherry wood floor leads directly to the corner living room with views of Central Park and east.
The Dining Room doubles as a home office with conference area. Walls at left painted a bright persimmon color separate the main entertaining space from the kitchen.
The Guest Bedroom is blissful yet refreshing. The details and lavender, aloe and melon color palette were developed with reference to an array of summer plants and the sea.
A Butler's Pantry, with wine refrigerator, was carved out of a corner of the expanded kitchen space planned by DKID to house the client's more formal dinnerware, flatware and glassware and to function as a dry bar. Countertops fabricated in imported French limestone, backsplash in terra cotta color stone mosaic tiles.
The newly expanded traditional styled kitchen planned by DKID seats six comfortably either at the granite top breakfast table or at the large matching granite top center island. Perimeter countertops fabricated in imported French limestone and backsplashes in a combination of limestone and terra cotta color stone mosaic tiles. At the window is the main farm sink with a second under-mounted farm prep sink in the island. Not in view: microwave drawer at back of island, double oven and warming drawer in wall opposite window, and desk area at entry to room.
A hand painted pastoral landscape mural painted on two walls and reflected in a large framed mirror above oversized pedestal sink and toilet has a serene and expansive effect.
Large scale furniture fits the generous proportions of this casual Family Room. Custom storage/display cabinet fabricated in waxed antique pine. Wood plank ceiling was whitewashed a pale shade of pine to contrast with deep red color walls.
This guest bath received much recognition for its innovative representation of materials. Custom concrete, metal and glass are the essential elements selected for their reference to the urban landscape. Hemp, straw and natural bath products enhance an organic aesthetic.
Earthy and organic, with a deep color palette the Powder Room becomes a secluded refuge.
Appliances were repositioned and a wall removed to completely open this Kitchen to the Dining Room. Custom cabinets were fabricated with resin inserts in uppers and resin countertops are back-lighted with LED light tape. Backsplash tiles are stainless steel.
